Best Performance

Serbia, when playing as their own country, have qualified for 3 of the last 4 World Cups, though they have not progressed out of the Group Stages since 1998, when they entered as Yugoslavia. They had a superb qualification campaign, where they finished top of the table without losing a single game, but it was the drama in their final game that capped it all off. Needing a win in Portugal in their final qualifier to finish top of the group and automatically qualify, Serbia went behind after a few minutes, but after equalizing through Tadic, Mitrovic scored in stoppage time win the game 2-1. It was a welcome result from them following the disappointment at not qualifying for last year’s European Championships, and they’ll be looking to better to their last 3 World Cup campaigns where they have failed to get our of the group stages.

Player to Watch

28 year old Aleksandar Mitrovic has had quite the international career, and it already the nations all time top scorer with 46 goals from 74 games. Domestically, things didn’t start that well for him in England, struggling to adapt to life in the Premier League with Newcastle and Fulham when he moved at 20 years old, but more recently, his stock has gone up. Last year in the Championship, he recorded the highest scoring English league season ever with 43 goals in 44 games, and upon returning to the Premier League, started the season with a brace against Liverpool.
