Best Performance

Saudi Arabia qualified for the World Cup on the final day of qualifying by defeating Australia to finish top of Group B and they will be taking part in their sixth World Cup Finals. They haven’t managed to escape the group stages in the last four though, with the only time they have managed to do so coming back in 1994 where they were defeated by finalists Italy in the Round of 16. In their last World Cup campaign, they were humbled 0-5 on the opening day against hosts Russia, and after losing to Uruguay, they did manage to pick up three points with a win against Egypt. It was their first win in the tournament since that 1994 campaign.

Player to Watch

30 year old midfielder Al Dawsari was the hero of Saudi Arabia’s final qualifying match against Australia, netting the only goal of the game from the penalty spot in a game they needed to avoid defeat in. It was his seventh goal in qualifying, making him joint top scorer alongside Saleh Al Shehri, though it will be the Al Hilal veteran, who has been at the club all his career, who will be main threat going forward. He also scorer the winner in the victory over Egypt in the tournament 4 years ago.
